چکیده

One of the necessary techniques for constructing a virtual museum is to digitize the artwork arranged inside a glass or acrylic display case without bringing the artwork out of the display case. By using photometric stereo, we estimate the shape (surface normal) and the reflectance (albedo) of the artwork arranged inside a transparent display case. If we illuminate the display case, the light will reflect at its surface; thus, we cannot apply conventional photometric stereo as is. In this paper, we propose a fivelight photometric stereo that estimates the shape and the reflectance of an object that has specularities under the circumstances that the light is reflected at the surface of the display case.

A Photometric Stereo Using Re-Projected Images for Active Stereo Vision System

In optical 3D shape measurement, stereo vision with structured light can measure 3D scan data with high accuracy and is used in many applications, but fine surface detail is difficult to obtain. On the other hand, photometric stereo can capture surface details but has disadvantages, in that its 3D data accuracy drops and it requires multiple light sources. When the two measurement methods are c...

An Introduction to Image-based 3D Surface Reconstruction and a Survey of Photometric Stereo Methods

1 This paper provides an introduction to photometric methods for image-based 3D shape reconstruction and a survey of photometric stereo techniques. We begin with taxonomy of active and passive shape acquisition techniques. Then we describe the methodical background of photometric 3D reconstruction, define the canonical setting of photometric stereo (Lambertian surface reflectance, parallel inci...

A Streamlined Photometric Stereo Framework for Cultural Heritage

In this paper, we propose a streamlined framework of robust 3D acquisition for cultural heritage using both photometric stereo and photogrammetric information. An uncalibrated photometric stereo setup is augmented by a synchronized secondary witness camera co-located with a point light source. By recovering the witness camera’s position for each exposure with photogrammetry techniques, we estim...

Temporal Dithering of Illumination for Fast Active Vision

Active vision techniques use programmable light sources, such as projectors, whose intensities can be controlled over space and time. We present a broad framework for fast active vision using Digital Light Processing (DLP) projectors. The digital micromirror array (DMD) in a DLP projector is capable of switching mirrors “on” and “off” at high speeds (10/s). An off-the-shelf DLP projector, howev...

Photometric stereo using LCD displays

This paper considers the problem of shape-from-shading using nearby extended light sources. The paper reviews a number of methods that employ nearby illuminants, and describes a new technique that assumes a rectangular planar nearby distributed uniform isotropic illuminant. It is shown that such a light source illuminating a small Lambertian surface patch is equivalent to a single isotropic poi...
